Gospel Reflection: Believing Beyond Natural Powers
Thursday of the Fifth Week of Lent
“Abraham your father rejoiced to see my day; he saw it and was glad.” So the Jews said to him, “You are not yet fifty years old and you have seen Abraham?” Jesus said to them, “Amen, amen, I say to you, before Abraham came to be, I AM.” So they picked up stones to throw at him; but Jesus hid and went out of the temple area. John 8:56–59
What was it that infuriated the Jews so much that they “picked up stones to throw at” Jesus? As we have reflected upon the past few days, in Chapter 8 of John’s Gospel, Jesus gradually becomes clearer and clearer about His divine identity.

DIVINE MERCY REFLECTION 85: Interior Mortification
One of the greatest gifts we can give to our Divine Lord is our willfulness. We often want what we want, when we want it. Our will can become stubborn and obstinate and this can easily dominate our whole being. As a result of this sinful tendency toward willfulness, one thing that delights our Lord greatly, and produces an abundance of grace in our lives, is an interior obedience to that which we do not want to do. This interior obedience, even to the smallest of things, mortifies our will so that we are made free to more completely obey the glorious Will of God (See Diary #365).
